The Use Of Big Story Book In Improving Students’ Vocabulary Mastery

This paper entitled The Use of Big Story Book in Improving Students’ Vocabulary Mastery aims to investigate the effectiveness of big story book in improving vocabulary mastery of fourth graders in an elementary school. The fact that learners in this elementary school was not taught by media became the background of this quasi experimental study.

The study employed two groups which were experimental and control group. The samples are the fourth graders of elementary school in Eastern Bandung. The data was obtained through pre-test, post-test, and questionnaire and analyzed by using independent and paired sample t-test on SPSS 17 for Windows Program.

The data analysis shows that the use of big story book seemed significantly to be effective in improving students’ vocabulary mastery with tobt > tcrit = 7.563 > 2.021, df = 48, p < .05 and it has effect size with r=0.737. From the data shown, it can be concluded that the use of big story book was effective in improving students’ vocabulary mastery. As the suggestions, for teachers who are interested in using the big story book in teaching their learners, it is suggested to build the meaningful context which is familiar with the students’ environment.
