The Use Of Series Pictureas In Teaching Vocabulary

Wednesday, August 1, 2012

This paper reports on a study concerned with the use of series pictures in teaching vocabulary to fifth graders in an elementary school in Bandung. This study aimed to investigate the effect of the use of series pictures on students’ vocabulary mastery and to discover the students’ responses toward the use of series pictures in learning English vocabulary.

This study employed a quasi-experimental research design which involved two classes, grouped into experimental and control groups. This study also employed a qualitative research design by using questionnaire and interview techniques. The data were obtained from a teaching phase for six weeks in which the students were taught about vocabulary using series pictures in the experimental group and through written text in the control group. This study revealed students’ vocabulary mastery improved after they were taught by using series pictures. It is indicated by the effect size value (r) = 0.403 which is greater than 0.371 (a value used to appoint a representative of a large effect as stated by Coolidge (2000). Moreover, responses toward the use of series pictures were positive. The students thought that they could: (1) memorize the words easily, (2) be more excited and motivated to learn English, (3) understand vocabulary easily. It is recommended that series pictures be implemented in teaching vocabulary especially for young learners.
